There are many (and I mean “many”) ideas, thoughts, and portrayals of what Heaven and Hell are.
Christians have ideas.
Non-Christians have ideas.
Other religions have ideas.
Whether or not we want to, our thoughts and ideas about Heaven and Hell are influenced by what we see and hear in this world. And there are some very graphic (in both the beautiful and terrifying sense of the word) images that we think of when we think of Heaven and Hell. Where did we get those ideas? Likely from art, movies, pictures, that we have seen.
So – is what we imagine actually Biblical? That’s a really good question. I don’t know exactly what it is that you imagine.
In my sermon on Sunday, I’ll do my best to demonstrate what are some of most often imagined depictions of Heaven and Hell we think of in 21st Century America and compare/contrast that with the Biblical images.
But, at the end of the day, is it even important that we have the right belief (or…dare I say, belief at all) about what Heaven and Hell are really like?
I believe it’s important that we believe they exist. Mostly, because Jesus speaks in terms that they do exist. So, are we going to take Jesus at His Word? Or not?
Can we have the perfect idea about what Heaven and Hell will be like? Probably not…because even the Bible itself has varied descriptions.
I’ll do my best to give you a good overview of the concepts, and then I’ll point you to some additional resources for you to pursue in your own study.
