This room is called the Sanctuary. Sanctuary means “a place to keep holy things.”
In a church, the “holy things” are the Sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper), God’s Word, and even Christian people. In most churches, the main purpose of the Sanctuary is to be set aside as a place to conduct worship services where God’s Word is preached and the Sacraments are administered.
Sometimes, this room is also called The Nave which comes from the Latin word navis (ship). When Christian people gather together, they are on a journey together through this life into eternity by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
